Separate and Unequal

Extended Comments

For this blog post I am writing extended comments to Emily Vieira's blog.
I agree with the quotes that she chose because they show how the students reacted to the transfer students. They didn't think anything different of them and that is important because the students are all just there to learn and get an education. The parents were downgrading these transfer students because they thought they were going to affect the school but they didn't at all. This isn't good for their kids to hear either because then they are going to be in that mindset when it is actually not like that. The students in that school became better because of the integrated school. There were no negative effects because of the transfer students. Integrated schools are beneficial for all students because it provides different resources and learning tools to the classroom.

The issue is blacks not getting the same education as whites and there needs to be more integration. The teachers usually turn away from low-income and poverty schools so that leaves these students with a less education than others. The teachers don't really want to be there so they aren't going to put their all into the job and then the students struggle. The courses taught are different and the students aren't getting the education that they should get. The advanced kids get better quality teachers than the kids who are behind. I agree with the quote that she included about the integration of lower-class communities into upper-class communities. These lower class students thrive in an upper class school because they get a better education and have more tools and resources for them to use. Overall, all students will benefit from transferring lower class students to a middle class school.

The society now should be way more integrated than it actually is.

  1. I completely agree with you! In my service learning I was talking to the teacher because she was explaining to me how many of these children come from schools all around providence. In my school district the school you went too was based on where you lived and which school you were the closest too. In Providence students are placed all throughout the city. We were discussing how if you placed many of these students in a different school district they would excel because of the education they would be receiving. My teacher has twenty six students in the class and its an English language learner classroom. A couple of the students don't speak English so imagine the teachers responsibility. If students were in a different district with assistants in classroom and help they would be getting a better education.

  2. I also read Emily's blog and I agreed with everything she said as well as your extended comments. I do completely agree with the final sentence saying schools should be way more integrated than they actually are because it is true. In my elementary school growing up, there was only one African American student in my whole grade and I did not experience more diversity until middle school. Great post!

  3. What stood out to me from your blog is when you said "the teachers dont really want to be there so they arent going to put their all into the job and the students stuggle." I agree with this and think teachers are the most imporntat person in a classroom. If teachers dont have passion for what they are teaching they shouldnt be teaching. There shouldnt be a lack of effort. Teachers should teach with their hearts, for the kids.

  4. As well as Laura what stood out to me was "the teachers don't really want to be there so they aren't going to put their all into the job and the students struggle." I never saw this from this point of view because I feel every teacher should want the best for each one of their students so they can succeed because they are the future of this country. So it really stood out to me that some teachers do fall in this category.

  5. I like the comic you chose. I saw so many kids in my school get switched to a trade school or a different school in order to prevent lower test scores.
